Installing Your Modem Using Windows 95

To install your modem, double click the My Computer icon on your Windows 95 desktop. double click the Control Panel icon.

Double click the Modems icon. If you do not have a modem installed, an Install New Modem Wizard will appear on your screen. If you know what type of modem you have, or if you have a driver disk which was supplied with your modem, place a tick in the box Don't detect my modem; I will selectit from a list and click Next so that Windows 95 will not attempt to automatically detect your modem. If you do not have a driver disk, or if you are not sure what kind of modem you have, leave the tick box blank and click Next.

If you already have your modem installed, please do not continue following the instructions on this page. If you are following the step-by-step guide to setting up a connection with Windows 95, skip to the next section on Installing the Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter.

If you have chosen to select your modem, a screen will appear, from which you can select your modem from a list. Scroll down the list of Manufacturers and select the manufacturer which produces your modem. Select the correct (or closest) model in the right hand window. If your modem type is not directly supported by Windows 95, you may try the Standard Modem Types. If you have a driver disk click Have Disk, insert your driver disk and click OK. Windows will display the modems supported on your disk. Select your modem and click Next.

Select the COM port to which your modem is connected and click Next. Windows will display the available COM ports. Note that in most cases, an external modem will be connected to COM1 or COM2, with COM2 being the most common. Click Next to proceed.

Windows will install your modem. Click Finish to complete the modem installation process. Your modem will now appear as an entry in the Modems Properties window, just as shown below.
